Associates

Established in 2002, HRPD Associates comprises a number of individuals who all have significant experience of running successful and major HR and OD projects in large blue chip organisations.

Dr Douglas Young BSc PhD CPsych MAC    Director

A seasoned management and organisation development consultant, Douglas spent ten years with an international consultancy and has conducted projects across a broad range of clients. He has run leadership development programmes for Senior Executives of IBM in New York and Sydney, and worked extensively with a broad range of other blue chip companies, including PepsiCo and The Royal Bank of Scotland.

Douglas has a first degree in Psychology & Computer Science, was awarded his PhD for research into learning processes, and has published a number of articles on coaching and organisation development in leading academic journals. He is currently a member of the British Psychology Society Special Group in Coaching Psychology, is an Assessor with the Association for Coaching and member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council. In 2006, he was awarded first prize in the Dennis Brown International Award by the Institute of Group Analysis for his work on evidence based group analytic approaches.

Brian Wishart  BSc, CIPD                         Associate Consultant

Brian was BP’s Director of Organisational and Individual Learning, Europe 2003-06, and has more than 25 years generalist HR experience gained in a European context within diverse and challenging environments in both the private and public sector. His expertise includes Executive Coaching, Team Building, Change Management, Employee Relations and Organisational Development. Some of his recent projects include: 

  • Supporting an M&A across a Refining and Chemicals business by integrating two distinct HR organisations into a single functioning team with a 30% reduction in cost
  • Coaching at Vice President and Country President level in major multinational
  • Creating and leading a European Team of 57 L&OD professionals using an internal consultancy team model
  • European Change Manager for a global Chemicals business designing and implementing a cultural change programme. Helping with the reorganisation of the business in Europe achieving 15% ROACE from a 5% start point

BSc ( Hons) Psychology; C.I.P.D.(Dialogos -Sloane MIT). Also Certificate in Employment Law, HAY and Psychometric trained. Has held Directorships as a Non-Executive Board Member of Teesside Training Enterprises, Forth Valley Enterprise Board and Opportunity 2000 Scotland.

Gerry Boyle                                       Associate Consultant

Gerry  worked internationally with IBM as a management development consultant, executive/ management coach and facilitator for many years. He has extensive experience of working internationally with organisations in areas such as, organisational development, change management, interpersonal skills, leadership, managerial styles, organisational climate, leadership competencies and coaching. Gerry has worked at all levels within organisations from executive down.  He has over twenty years of experience of managing in manufacturing, communications, public relations, human resources consultancy and management development. He also has experience of managing a remote international team.

Currently an independent consultant, he is working with various organisations, is a faculty member with a  leading European training and development organisation, and is presently undertaking development work with a major international services company.

He has a Masters in Human Resource Management and is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development. An experienced counsellor and psychotherapist with a Diploma in Counselling and Supervision, he is a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Chris Garner                                              Associate Consultant

Followed an H.R. career path into general management and consultancy. He previously worked for ICL, British Gas, Kuwait Oil Company, Solus Ocean Systems. He has been a consultant since 1982 with the United Nations, Ministry of Housing (Bahrain) and Hay, and has worked across the full range of HR consulting activities. Clients have been notably in the privatised utilities, the public sector and its emerging agencies and the NHS, and in recent years on large change projects for multinational clients, particularly in the energy and banking sectors

Chris has a track record of helping organisations to improve their performance. Particular strengths are in change through performance management, organisation design and effectiveness and management development at senior levels. He is a seasoned practitioner in the use of competencies to give competitive advantage. He is a Rotarian and lives high on the moors on the Yorkshire - Lancashire border In October 1996. Maths and Management Science graduate from Manchester University (UMIST).

Andy Johnston                                         Associate Consultant

Andy followed a progressive career in HR, working for a succession of ‘blue-chip’ companies - (Vauxhall Motors, Granada Group, Northern Foods and the William Hill Organisation). During that time he had strategic and ‘hands on’ operational responsibility for all HR activities including resourcing, remuneration and benefits, ER, development and career planning and OD. He led significant change initiatives and gained first hand experience working with mergers and acquisitions. He then joined Hay Management Consultants and, over a period of seven years, developed a wide and diverse client base supplying the full range of HR-based consulting activities.

An Economics graduate from Hull University, DMS and Fellow of the CIPD. Andy lives near Holmfirth, in West Yorkshire, sings in a male voice choir and is a lifelong supporter of Derby County FC.

Ian G Warnock MSc C.Eng MIEE                  Associate consultant

An established management consultant, Ian Warnock’s is a Director of IRW Solutions, one of the most established and profitable private IT and consulting businesses in Scotland. IRW has been successfully grown over 12 years to provide services to a wide client base of both private and public sector organisations, including blue-chips.

Ian is also a qualified lead auditor in BS7799 ISMS,a Chartered Engineer and is also author of two best selling textbooks on Business Excellence, methodologies and the effective use of Information systems.

Martin Gregory                                        Associate Consultant

has worked as a coach, team builder and assessor in a range of organizations.  He has worked professionally in Europe, Australia, and the Middle East and in Canada. Focusing predominately in the private sector, Martin’s early career spanned the Royal Navy, Lloyds Register of Shipping and The Industrial Society. He was awarded an MBA from London and New York Business schools in 1981/3.  Post-Business School, he played a significant role in the development of satellite television in the UK and founded his own yacht charter company – Charterline in 1988.

 

He joined Hay Management Consultants in 1989 where he developed his coaching expertise and successfully led several business teams. He set up his own executive coaching consultancy, Execo in 2004. He recently participated in the last leg of the Round the World Yacht Race.Martin has an MBA from London Business School, is affiliated with the International Coach Federation, the Management Consultants Association. He trained in counseling with the Metanoia Institute and is a MBTI practitioner

Tom Mair                                                           Associate Consultant

Tom is a Director of Human Resources with extensive private and public sector experience in major organisations. He has significant experience of working with UK Boards and European and American corporate HR groups within the life sciences, electronics and health sectors.

Tom has operated at Board level in a range of complex organisations facing substantial change agendas within highly regulated, research and learning driven working environments in both the commercial and public service sectors.  His broad experience at a senior level and genuine interest in supporting teams and individuals on both a professional and personal level is a combination that will benefit a wide range of clients in established organisations, emergent technologies and the public sector.

Tom is a graduate of Strathclyde University, a corporate Fellow of the IPD and is currently completing the Institute of Leadership and Management Diploma in Leadership, Mentoring and Executive Coaching.

Andrew Harley                                            Associate Consultant

graduated from the New University of Ulster in 1975 with a degree in psychology. His working career started in human resource management with a subsidiary of the American pharmaceutical company, G D Searle, where he specialised in recruitment and selection.   In the late 1970's he moved into the distribution industry as head of industrial relations for a specialist transport company.

In the mid 1980's he became personnel manager for Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories in the United Kingdom.   This period saw the establishment of the Neuroscience Research Centre at Terlings Park and he managed a range of activities to facilitate the selection and development of senior scientific/medical staff in a commercial context.

He then moved to Rowntree plc in York, where he was instrumental in the provision of assessment centres for graduate recruitment. Additionally he introduced self-insight development centres, incorporating sophisticated assessment methodologies; to facilitate reality based personal development plans for senior managers.

In 1988 he joined a major HR consultancy and became their practice leader for assessment and development in the North East of England and Scotland.   He has carried out individual assessments at board level. The main thrust of his work, however, has been the design, development and delivery of assessment and development centres.

Charlie Efford                             Associate Consultant

Charlie is an experienced management consultant specialising in the field of Human Resources. He has 16 years experience and has worked with many organisations in both the public and private sectors. He has a degree in Engineering from Cambridge University, Diploma in Management Studies from Farnborough CAT, A Certificate in Counselling from Warwick University (currently studying for Diploma) and holds BPS certificates in testing at Level A and B.

He spent the early part of his career as a Captain in the Royal Engineers serving in various locations around the world. On leaving the Army he spent a year managing an Antiques Centre before moving onto Cripps Sears, an executive search and selection company in London. In 1990 he joined Hay Management Consultants and put his varied experience to good use, developing a talent for helping his clients to reach practical solutions to their business problems.

Charlie has particular expertise in the fields of coaching & mentoring, reward management, job evaluation, equal pay, competency modelling, performance management, 360 degree appraisal, and candidate selection.

He has worked with a wide range of blue chip organisations including, Geest, McCain Foods, HM Prison Service, Office of Manpower Economics, London Development Agency, Carlsberg Tetley, Allied Domecq, Cancer Research UK, Trent Strategic Health Authority, Queens Medical Centre and Wilkinson Hardware Stores.
